Food and Plants Dangerous to Cats and Dogs

Whether you are a new cat owner or an experienced dog handler it's never a bad time to review the following list.

Foodstuffs to avoid

It can be tempting to share your meals with your cat or dog but some of the food we eat can be extremely dangerous to our furry friends. Here is a list of food that cats and dogs should never eat.

  • Chocolate
  • Caffeine
  • Onions
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Cooked bones (although raw bones are great)
  • Milk (it’s a popular misconception that cats should have milk as most cats are lactose intolerant)
  • Avocado
  • Alcohol

Plants to avoid

It is also important to note that some plants can be dangerous too so take extra care when planting these and ensure your cat or dog doesn’t have a nibble of the flowers, leaves or bulbs.

  • Daffodils
  • Hyacinths
  • Tulips
  • Oleander
  • Cyclamen
  • Amaryllis
  • Hydrangea
  • Sweet pea
  • Ivy
  • Grape vine
  • Lily of the valley
  • Yew
  • Conkers & acorns
  • Philodendron

Be mindful of these symptoms

Of course, it’s not possible to watch your cat and dog every second of every day so if you do suspect they have eaten something dangerous, contact your local vet straight away. Listed below are a few things to look out.

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Lethargy
  • Seizures
  • Blood in stools
  • Loss of appetite

It's worth remembering, however, that every animal reacts differently so if you feel as though your pet is acting out of sorts in any way, always consult your vet.
